Swimming

I learned to swim when I was three years of age, and take it for granted; but I know people who never learned, for whatever reason, to survive in water. I’ve seen, firsthand, someone in water who couldn’t swim…and it was a harrowing experience. If they'd been alone, they would have drowned.

Why…it could be a past traumatic experience with water, or their parents couldn’t swim and therefore were unable to teach them, or didn’t think it was important…or whatever… but everyone should know how to swim, or at least tread water.

The ability to swim has definitely saved my life on several occasions (some intentional, some not), and I feel this ability should be a “Life Requirement”.

Remember Water Babies? I’m all for it – the sooner, the better.

Because my mother did not know how to swim, my first paid extracurricular activity was swim lessons at the YMCA.

I thanked my parents many times for all that they sacrificed for me and my siblings. I continue to thank my mother to this day.

Excellent point, Sam.

I taught myself.

But I think lessons for children are the best idea. I wish I'd had them as a kid.
